Where It All Began
Where paddy fields whisper ancient stories and the wind carries the fragrance of lotus-dotted tanks, Ranshire Ceylon was born — not from a boardroom strategy, but from the soul of a man who grew up breathing Polonnaruwa's legendary air.
Ranshire Ceylon was founded in 2013 by Mr. H.W. Tharanga Hashan — a son of Polonnaruwa who grew up within walking distance of one of the most significant archaeological complexes in Southeast Asia. Built on a singular belief: that travel designed by someone who genuinely belongs to the landscapes they share delivers what no conventional operator ever could. This native intelligence — combined with his exceptional English language proficiency and professional IT teaching background — makes Tharanga an exceptionally effective bridge between Sri Lanka's ancient world and the international traveller's modern expectations.
Where other operators approach Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle as outsiders arranging visits, Ranshire Ceylon approaches it as an insider opening doors — and that is a difference travellers from London to Sydney to Munich can feel in every detail of their journey. Ranshire Ceylon is not simply a tour company. It is the living embodiment of Sri Lanka's Ancient Capital region.
Our Milestones
From a childhood among ancient ruins to Sri Lanka's most authentically rooted heritage tourism pioneer
A Childhood Among Ancient Ruins — Knowledge No Credential Can Give
Born on 13 August 1985 in Polonnaruwa, Tharanga grows up within walking distance of the Ancient Capital's UNESCO monuments. He builds careers as an IT Instructor at NAITA (2009–2012) and as Technical Mate at Ceylon Electricity Board from 2012 — and throughout, the conviction deepens: Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle deserves a tourism framework built by a genuine insider, not an outsider arranging visits.
Ranshire Ceylon Founded — The Ancient Capital's Own DMC
Ranshire Ceylon is established in Polonnaruwa — Sri Lanka's first destination management company founded by a resident of the Cultural Triangle with 12 years of subsequently built heritage authority. The company launches across seven tourism verticals: cultural heritage, wildlife safaris, heritage homestay, ground transport, village immersion, spiritual pilgrimage, and specialty interests. The Ranshire Paddy View Retreat concept is born alongside operations.
Green Homestay Certification — Environmental Recognition
Ranshire Paddy View Retreat achieves Green Homestay Certification from the Sri Lanka Eco Tourism Foundation, recognising our plastic-free policy, organic garden, responsible community sourcing, and environmental standards. The first milestone of formal sustainability recognition for the North Central Province's pioneering heritage homestay.
TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice — Heritage Tourism Recognition
Ranshire Ceylon receives TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice recognition for excellence in Polonnaruwa Heritage Experiences — reflecting the accumulated testimony of ten years of international guest journeys. Guests from UK, Australia, Germany, UAE, and India contribute reviews describing experiences they call "the finest in Asia."
SLTDA Registration & 20-Package Signature Portfolio
Ranshire Ceylon achieves SLTDA registration as an authorised inbound tour operator in Polonnaruwa District. Twenty signature tour packages are professionally developed spanning Heritage & Cultural, Wildlife & Nature, Homestay & Village, Wellness & Spiritual, and Specialty categories — targeting UK, Germany, Australia, UAE, India, and Scandinavia markets.
400+ Annual Itineraries — Operational Momentum
Ranshire Ceylon reaches 400+ individually crafted itineraries delivered annually, maintaining 96% guest satisfaction across all markets. The six primary source markets — UK (30%), Australia & NZ (25%), Germany & Austria (20%), UAE (12%), India (8%), and Scandinavia (5%) — validate the resident-operator model through returning guests and premium referrals.
Leadership & Legacy — The Road to Regional Dominance
Phase 2: Expand from 400 to 600 annual itineraries; SLTDA Gold Star classification; Booking.com & Airbnb direct listings for Ranshire Paddy View. Phase 3: UNESCO Cultural Heritage Tourism Responsible Operator Certification; Ranshire Ceylon Heritage Academy for next-generation Polonnaruwa guide training; formal community tourism fund seeded by 2% of annual revenues; recognition as North Central Province's dominant heritage tourism brand.
Three Forces, One Purpose
The convergence that makes Ranshire Ceylon impossible to replicate
Native Heritage Authority
Mr. H.W. Tharanga Hashan — Son of Polonnaruwa
Growing up within walking distance of Gal Vihara, the Royal Palace, and Parakrama Samudra builds an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Ancient Capital that no academic credential can manufacture. This native intelligence is Ranshire Ceylon's founding DNA and enduring competitive moat.
Community Network Advantage
Twelve years of trusted relationships across the Cultural Triangle
Direct, trusted connections with Polonnaruwa's Department of Archaeology, Minneriya's park rangers, Dambulla's temple authorities, and surrounding village leaders — built over years of shared community life. These bonds produce preferential access and authentic experiences unavailable anywhere else.
Genuine Community Commitment
Community-first operations rooted in genuine belonging
Tharanga's organic, deeply personal commitment to community welfare and heritage preservation goes beyond corporate checklists. It is the lived commitment of someone who belongs to Polonnaruwa and has invested his career in protecting what makes it extraordinary for both residents and the world.
The Ranshire Ceylon Difference
Resident Inside the Triangle
Tharanga's decision to build Ranshire Ceylon in Polonnaruwa rather than relocate to Colombo was a mark of geographic intelligence: travellers want to be based inside the experience, not bussed to it. Sigiriya 45 minutes, Minneriya 20 minutes, Polonnaruwa UNESCO precinct at our doorstep.
Paddy View Homestay Uniqueness
Ranshire Paddy View Retreat — genuine family homestay facing ancient paddy fields cultivated for over 2,000 years, 3km from UNESCO Polonnaruwa. A market position found nowhere else in the North Central Province. Guests fall asleep to crickets rather than generators.
Three-Pillar Integration
Inbound touring, heritage homestay, and ground transport under one roof — a rare integration that creates seamless guest experience, operational efficiency, and financial resilience. Guests experience Ranshire Ceylon as a single, cohesive quality standard from arrival to farewell.
More Than a Tour Operator
Ranshire Ceylon embodies the convergence of native Polonnaruwa heritage expertise, authentic community partnerships, and unwavering commitment to responsible experiences that benefit every stakeholder: guests, communities, and the extraordinary environments we steward.
We are native knowledge meeting personalised itinerary excellence. We are insider access meeting genuine community empowerment. We are commercial vision meeting the authentic cultural wisdom of a man who belongs to one of history's greatest landscapes.
"Travel, when designed with genuine insider knowledge and authentic local relationships, transforms lives — and Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, with its UNESCO ruins, elephant gatherings, and family paddy fields, is among the most extraordinary experiences on earth when accessed through the right hands."
